Lumenwerx shines a light on an ultra-modern appliance showroom, inside a historical industrial space.

Built inside a historic boiler house attached to a 19th-century carpet factory, upscale appliance manufacturer Fisher & Paykel’s Experience Centre blends contemporary design with historic architecture. Working alongside Omar Gandhi Architects and Marcel Dion Lighting Design, the Lumenwerx team helped develop a lighting strategy that enhances both the space’s historic character and the company’s cutting-edge appliances.

A notable challenge for the lighting team was the space’s triple-height volume. With such high ceilings, a layered lighting approach was required to balance direct illumination of the appliances on display with the openness of the space. Underpinning the strategy, our Cluster Downlight, and Cluster Pendant luminaires elegantly solved the issue. With their precise 1.2-inch LED optical cells, these allow designers to scale illumination from discreet accents to larger lighting compositions, ensuring visual comfort for visitors while directing their attention to key appliances and displays.

Above the “Social Kitchen,” the experiential heart of the Experience Centre, Cluster Combinations pendants deliver both general illumination and the precision task lighting needed for culinary demonstrations. Completing the palette of light are Via 2 and Squero pendants, chosen to provide soft ambient illumination and focused layers of light.

Together, the lighting strategy we developed creates a refined composition that elevates the brand’s appliances, lending an overall premium feel to the centre. We’re proud of how the lighting provides an aesthetic response to the space’s contrasts, balancing industrial grit with refined modern elegance.
