Working alongside the architects, Lumenwerx developed a layered lighting strategy that mirrors the forest outside while enhancing comfort, clarity, and focus inside.
Sometimes, interior illumination can strengthen our relationship with the outdoors. Such is the case at École secondaire du Bosquet in Drummondville, Quebec. At this architecturally exceptional school, lighting was conceived as an extension of the forest surrounding the building. To bring that vision to life, Lumenwerx worked with the architectural team to develop a plan that prioritizes daylight, complements the warmth of the materials, and embraces a dialogue with nature.
The overall goal was to extend the dappled, calming quality of natural forest light into the school’s learning spaces. To achieve this, we took a human-centric approach, considering circadian rhythms to help enhance students’ cognitive performance. (No more falling asleep in class!)
In classrooms and gathering areas, our Via 3 recessed fixtures were selected for their low-glare performance and precise tunability, delivering balanced ambient lighting. Along perimeter zones, Via 3 Perimeter fixtures balance daylight with soft vertical illumination, minimizing visual contrast and strengthening connections between the interior and the outdoors. In noisy areas where students gather, Via 1.5 Acoustix luminaires help dampen sound, evoking the stillness of the forest, while Pop Recessed round fixtures provide comfortable downlighting, echoing gentle breaks of light through a leafy canopy.
The net result? A layered, adaptable lighting system focused on nurturing light, supporting student well-being, and fostering a sense of belonging. At École secondaire du Bosquet, lighting doesn’t compete with the natural world, it collaborates with it. We wish schools looked like this when we were younger.
