A flexible lighting strategy supports innovators, startups, and collaboration.

Situated inside Chicago’s historic Merchandise Mart, healthcare incubator MATTER’s workplace was envisioned as a flexible environment reflecting the vibrant community it houses. Designed by Gensler, Lumenwerx was brought in to help design a lighting strategy to support collaboration and reinforce the brand’s tech-forward identity.

Part workspace, part community hub, MATTER’s plan called for lighting that could illuminate and inspire across a variety of settings and experiences. From large gatherings to focused work sessions, the plan would need to deliver visual cohesion while delivering effective lighting for all use cases.

Kicking off at reception, Via 1.5 recessed pattern fixtures create shape and definition overhead, offering a warm feeling upon arrival. As visitors move through the space, Via 2 pendants define work zones while complementing the industrial architecture and exposed ceilings. Elsewhere, including within a presentation space, Pivot pendant patterns establish an overhead grid of light that offers balanced illumination and a sense of momentum at the ceiling.

Moving through the space, one of the most striking features appears in the heart of a multi-use hub. Here, Elia Round pendants introduce a dramatic circular form that adds spatial volume while radiating the energy that defines MATTER’s brand.

Together, this thoughtfully arranged suite of luminaires clearly illustrates how light matters when it comes to architecture. At MATTER, visitors are presented with a visually comfortable, energizing lighting system that captures the spirit of innovation at every turn.
