Lumenwerx partners with Ædifica architects to produce a fresh approach to retail lighting.

At Avril Griffintown, lighting isn’t applied, it’s embedded to shape a retail environment that feels intuitive, layered and human. Conceived by Montreal architecture firm Ædifica, this forward-thinking supermarket was designed as a sequence of experiences, rather than a single open floor. Working alongside the design team, Lumenwerx helped design a lighting strategy to guide shoppers through each zone of the experience, from fresh market to prepared foods, to a bistro.

In order to create the casual, yet comforting feel the architects were aiming for, the lighting strategy called for a balance between performance and warmth. To achieve it, we introduced a palette of luminaires that could shift tone seamlessly while maintaining cohesion throughout the store. To start with, Via 4 recessed  establish a quiet ceiling plane, while delivering precise illumination that highlights fresh food on offer, while cutting down on the glare often associated with supermarket environments.

Moving through the store, Via linear fixtures are integrated along pathways and key display areas, seamlessly shifting between ambient and accent lighting. Additional feature areas are gently lit by Squero Pendants and Squero Combinations, providing directional illumination on product shelving. In more intimate spaces, such as the in-store seating areas, Aera 4 Downlight, Cluster Surface and Cluster Downlight fixtures add warmth while complementing pendant lighting and the store’s abundance of natural light.

The overall result is a lighting strategy that organizes, enhances and elevates the customer experience, a tasty upgrade over the supermarkets of yesterday.
